ProblemThis product came when there was a need to inspect many very similar parts on a vision system. The vision system could only focus over a range of about 1.5". This substantially limited the commercially available options for holding parts while being able to inspect them.
To prevent the need for many custom fixtures, the vise needs to allow components to be added and removed to hold a variety of parts. |
ResultThe vise was modeled, prototypes cut and assembled. There are multiple V-grooves to allow for holding round parts vertically. A relief cut was added to allow lighting to come from the edge and illuminate chamfers. Black matte finish plastic was used to improve contrast between the vise and small metal parts, as well as not scratch or mar delicate finishes on parts.
To prevent the need for custom making all parts, holes were drilled and tapped on one side to allow the use of dial indicator points. Another hole was added to allow gauge pins to be mounted for holding cannulated and hollow parts. These additional part holding options add minimal cost. Additionally standard linear bearings, shafts, springs and collars were used. |
